Homework

PARENTAL GUIDELINES

Does Raphael School have a homework policy?
Yes, homework is a regular feature of both the Junior and Senior curricula at Raphael Independent School.  The tasks set by teachers will grow out of work covered in class, or will be in preparation for new work.  At the beginning of the academic year, each child will bring home a copy of their homework timetable for parents to keep.  This will detail which subjects a pupil should study each evening, and approximately the amount of time which should be allowed for homework.

How can parents become involved in their child’s homework?
We feel that it is important for parents to know what their children are doing for homework, as it keeps parents informed about the content and the progress of their children’s studies.  Therefore, we ask you to sign weekly as a minimum your child’s homework diary, which details the exact tasks which have been set.

What does homework actually consist of?
The content of homework varies from subject to subject, and from week to week.  Activities may include learning for tests, taking notes, spellings, research, drawing, interviewing, reading, essay writing etc.  Each pupil will know exactly when a homework task needs to be completed as it will be written down in the homework diary.

Junior and Subject Teachers check homework on a daily basis, and Senior Form Teachers check homework diaries on a weekly basis.

How will I know whether my child’s diary is completed properly?

Have you any ‘tips’ for parents in organising homework?
Your child will be taught study skills for homework, but the following quick points are useful.
  1. Set a regular time aside.
  2. Establish an area in the home for homework to be completed with:
    • No distractions
    • A table or desk
    • Adequate heat and lighting
    • Relevant equipment (books, pencils etc.)
  3. Help your child if difficulties arise but try to avoid doing the homework for them.
  4. Discuss their homework with them so that they feel positive about their work and their achievements.  Look at marked work.
  5. If any problems arise, contact the relevant member of staff.
